I’m a veteran. Where do I start?
Start with our Veterans category — it has 13 programs just for veterans, from VA healthcare to housing help. Also run the checker: it asks about veteran status and will point you to the right programs. For one-on-one help, the Jacksonville Vet Center (904-399-8387) offers free counseling, and 211 can connect you to veteran-specific resources.
I’m not a U.S. citizen. Can I still get help?
It depends on the program. Many nonprofits, food pantries, and community health centers help everyone regardless of immigration status — we’ve noted this in program descriptions where we know it. Federal programs like SNAP and Medicaid have citizenship or qualified-immigrant requirements, but Florida KidCare covers many immigrant children. Never pay anyone who promises to “get you benefits” — that’s a scam. See our Disclaimer for how to protect yourself.
I need help today — right now. What do I do?
- Call 2-1-1 (or 904-632-0600): free, confidential, 24/7. They’ll connect you to food, shelter, and crisis help immediately.
- If you’re hungry now: see our Food programs — many pantries are same-day, no appointment needed.
- If you’re unsafe: call 911. For domestic violence, the National Hotline is 1-800-799-7233 (24/7).
- If it’s a mental health crisis: call or text 988.
