Free rides to the doctor in Jacksonville: JTA Connexion, Medicaid rides, and senior options

Getting to the appointment is half the battle — especially if you don’t drive, your car is unreliable, or the bus doesn’t run when you need it. Jacksonville has several free and low-cost medical rides. Which one fits you depends on your age, disability, and insurance.

JTA Connexion — paratransit for riders with disabilities

JTA Connexion is Jacksonville’s door-to-door paratransit service for people whose disability prevents them from using regular buses. Rides must be booked in advance and you must be certified eligible. To apply or book: (904) 265-6999. Fares are low and many riders qualify for free trips through partner programs.

Connexion TD — rides for people with low incomes

Connexion Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) serves Duval residents who are transportation-disadvantaged — low income, elderly, or disabled — and need rides to medical appointments, work, and essential services. Call (904) 265-6001 to check eligibility and book.

Medicaid NET rides — free rides to covered appointments

If you have Medicaid (including most managed-care plans), you get free non-emergency medical transportation (NET) to covered appointments — doctor visits, dialysis, therapy, pharmacy trips in some plans. Book through your plan’s transportation broker, usually at least 3 days ahead; the number is on the back of your Medicaid card. Urgent trips can often be arranged faster.

ReadiRide and JTA Reduced Fare — cheaper everyday transit

For routine trips, JTA’s ReadiRide offers on-demand neighborhood service in select zones, and the JTA Reduced Fare program cuts bus fares for seniors 65+, people with disabilities, and Medicare cardholders. JTA customer service: (904) 630-3100.

Which one is yours?

  • Have Medicaid? Start with Medicaid NET — it’s free and built into your plan.
  • Have a disability that keeps you off regular buses? Apply for JTA Connexion.
  • Low income, elderly, or disabled without Medicaid? Try Connexion TD.
  • Just need cheaper buses? Ask JTA about Reduced Fare and ReadiRide zones near you.

Book early, confirm the day before, and keep your appointment card handy — drivers and dispatchers need the exact address and time. Missed medical rides are a top reason appointments get skipped; these programs exist so yours doesn’t have to be.
