Jacksonville’s Section 8 waitlist is closed — 6 things you can do instead
Let’s say it plainly, because too many sites won’t: the Section 8 (Housing Choice Voucher) waiting list in Jacksonville is closed. Jacksonville Housing closed all of its waiting lists — vouchers and public housing — effective May 31, 2023, at 5:00 p.m., and no applications are being taken. Anyone offering to put you on the list now, especially for a fee, is not telling you the truth. Applying for benefits is always free.
A closed list is not the end of the road, though. Here are six things that actually help.
- If you applied before, check your status — and stay reachable
Log into your Rent Café account through jaxha.org to see your waiting-list status and update your contact information. When a list reopens, housing authorities purge applicants they can’t reach. Keeping your address, phone, and email current is the difference between keeping your place and losing it.
- Get on the alerts so you hear it the day it reopens
Waitlists reopen quietly, and the window can be short. Our program page for the Housing Choice Voucher has a free notify-me alert: tell us your email once and we will email you when the list reopens. Watch jaxha.org announcements, too — the official word will come from there.
- Apply to Project-Based Voucher properties directly
Project-Based Vouchers work differently: the voucher stays with a specific apartment (1–4 bedrooms at listed Jacksonville complexes), so you apply through the property, not the central waitlist. Pick a complex from Jacksonville Housing’s PBV listing and contact it directly to ask about openings and how to apply. This is the most real voucher route open right now.
- Look at income-based apartments that are taking people
Ability Housing runs 13 affordable and supportive properties across the region for families, seniors, and people with disabilities, with rents based on income. Ask about current openings. Other income-based communities in our directory take applications property by property — openings change constantly, so call, don’t just browse.
- Behind on rent right now? Treat it as the emergency it is
A future voucher doesn’t stop this month’s eviction. The City of Jacksonville’s Emergency Assistance Program helps Duval residents with a documented crisis pay rent, mortgage, or utility bills. Appointments are first-come: call (904) 255-2469 at 9:30 a.m. on weekdays — they go fast. If you lose your housing anyway, Coordinated Entry (Changing Homelessness, 904-354-1100, weekdays) is the front door to shelter and housing help across 50+ local agencies, and Sulzbacher and City Rescue Mission have beds tonight.
- Veterans: use the veterans’ door
Veteran households have a separate route: SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families, through Changing Homelessness) provides case management and temporary financial help to veterans who are homeless or about to be. The city’s Military Affairs and Veterans Department (904-255-5550) gives free benefits help — use it before paying anyone for claims or housing assistance.
The honest summary
The voucher list will reopen someday — funding decides when, and nobody honest can give you a date. What you can do today: protect any place you already hold in line, get alerted, apply where applications are actually open, and get emergency help if this month is the crisis. Our housing directory keeps every one of these doors in one place, and every listing was verified against the organization itself.
