Food stamps in Jacksonville: how Florida Food Assistance works in 2026

Food stamps in Florida are called Food Assistance — part of SNAP, run by the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). There is no separate Jacksonville application and no office visit required. Here is how it actually works in 2026.

Who it is for

Florida residents with low income — including seniors on fixed incomes and people with disabilities. You must be a U.S. citizen or have a qualified noncitizen status, have (or have applied for) a Social Security number, and meet the income and eligibility rules. Most adults aged 16–64 also have work rules to meet. Florida uses a broad categorical-eligibility rule: the gross income limit is 200% of the federal poverty level for most households.

How much you can get

Your amount depends on your household size, income, and expenses. These are the maximum monthly amounts for FY2026 — most households get less, based on their actual numbers:
Household 1: $298 · 2: $546 · 3: $785 · 4: $994 · 5: $1,183 · 6: $1,421 · 7: $1,571 · 8: $1,789 · Each additional person: +$218.

Benefits arrive on an ACCESS Florida EBT card, which works like a debit card at authorized stores for breads, cereals, fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, poultry, dairy — even plants and seeds to grow food.

One rule change to know in 2026

Since April 20, 2026, Florida SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy soda, energy drinks, candy, or certain prepared desserts. If your card is declined on those items, that is the new rule working — not a problem with your balance.

How to apply at MyACCESS — step by step

  1. Go to MyACCESS (the state’s benefits portal) and create an account, or sign in.
  2. Start one application. The same application covers Food Assistance, Temporary Cash Assistance, and Medicaid — apply for everything at once.
  3. Answer the household questions — who lives and eats with you, income, rent and utility costs. Answer for the household that buys and prepares food together.
  4. Submit documents — ID, proof of income, and proof of Florida residency can be uploaded in the portal. Don’t let a missing document stop you from submitting; you can add documents after.
  5. Complete the interview if DCF schedules one — many households are interviewed by phone.
  6. Watch for the EBT card and notices by mail. DCF decides eligibility; if you’re denied, the notice says why and how to appeal.

No computer? You can apply at a DCF Family Resource Center or a community partner, or send a paper application to the Office of Economic Self Sufficiency Mail Center, P.O. Box 1770, Ocala, FL. And Feeding Northeast Florida — the regional food bank — guides people through SNAP applications, on top of its 400+ partner pantries and food programs across the area.

Two things that changed — don’t trust old guides

  • SUNCAP ended September 30, 2026. SSI recipients no longer get food assistance automatically through SUNCAP — if that’s you, apply for regular Food Assistance through MyACCESS.
  • Anything that tells you to apply through a “DEO” office or an old CONNECT system is out of date.
